An organizational
meeting for the Lamar County Range and Wildlife Project is scheduled for
Thursday, September 3, 2009, at the Lamar County Fair Grounds at 5:30 PM. Anyone
interested in this fun, hands-on learning project should make plans to attend
this important meeting. After a brief introductory presentation, we will be
discussing our agenda and calendar of events for the year.
Participants in this
activity will be able to compete at various levels throughout the State in plant
identification, wildlife and range evaluation contests this Fall and Spring
2010. The first contest will be held at the State Fair of Texas on September
26th. Plaques, belt buckles and other prizes will be awarded to teams and
individuals. Contest involvement is not required for participation in this
exciting, educational program. Some excellent summer camp opportunities will
also be available to participants next July.
Although the primary
focus is on plant identification skills, an emphasis will be placed on
environmental education from a conservation perspective. If you are interested
in a related project, Mr. Newman will be glad to help you develop a
self-directed project plan including available resources, leadership and service
activities, contests, summer camps, etc. Currently recognized projects in the
Environmental Sciences area are: City Critters, Composting and Recycling,
Energy, Field & Stream, Forestry, Investigating Water, Outdoor Education,
Range Science, Shooting Sports, Something's Fishy, Sportfishing, White-tailed
Deer, Wildlife Science and Wildlife Success Stories & Endangered
Species.
Regular meetings will
normally be held in the Extension Office on the fourth Tuesday of each month.
Schedule changes, field trip/contest planning, homework assignments and other
announcements will be made at each meeting and supplemented by occasional email
notices. Meetings begin at 5:30 PM and end around 7:00
PM.
