Brownwood County Camp Programs

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service 4-H and Youth Development Program provides summer camping opportunities to youth ages 9-18 at the 4-H Conference Center in Brownwood, Texas. Think it's too early to start thinking about summer? Maybe, but at least you can start scheduling, knowing these dates and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Each summer, the 4-H Conference Center hosts camps for up to 1,200 youth. "Camping is more than the educational workshops of canoeing, archery, rifle and swimming", according to Darlene Locke, Director of the 4-H Conference Center. "While those are the "fun" activities that the youth look forward to, parents can feel confident knowing their child learns many other valuable life skills. Camping allows youth to experience a social environment, often very different from their daily home life. Youth from various backgrounds come together for a common interest. Youth learn to live with one another and to accept their differences and their similarities. They learn to be responsible for "their space". They gain independence." Camps at the 4-H Conference Center are open to all youth, 4-H membership is not a requirement to participate.

"Camping at the 4-H Conference Center exposes youth to new opportunities that they may not have in their own 4-H program or other youth organizations. They have opportunity to challenge themselves toward new goals as they ascend the climbing tower or participate on the giant swing. What an exhilarating feeling, being some 60 feet in the air, while others encourage you to keep going. Who knew how much teamwork and communication were required to navigate a canoe? Camping provides that experience and teaches youth to work together for a common goal," Locke said.

The 4-H Conference Center camps aim to reach every youth with at least one or two activities that will either be new to them, will challenge them, will help them to express their creativity or will allow them to develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills. The 2009 camp schedule is available and includes four sessions of County Camp, allowing county groups ages 9-18 to participate during the same session. Two sessions of Prime Time, one for youth ages 12-13 and a second session for youth ages 9-11 brings youth of those specific ages together from all over the state, for a camp experience. SpecTra is a week-long activity specifically for 4-H youth ages 14 and older that focuses on career exploration and 4-H project enhancement. Check out these camps and other scheduled activities on the 4-H Conference Center website, texas4h-ctr.tamu.edu.

Texas 4-H is a one-hundred year program of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service that develops young people between the ages of 9 (or 8 in and in the 3rd grade) to 18 into the future leaders of tomorrow.  Through 4-H, youth gain valuable life skills through fun educational experiences and opportunities.  Camping is just one of those opportunities.
