Denton County 4-H Youth Service Day Roundup - May 2nd

As you have seen, the 2008-2009 Denton County 4-H Council has placed high priority on community service this year.  We have been selected as one of one hundred nationwide programs as recipients of the State Farm Youth Service Day grant.   We are nearing the end of the year and have a great wrap-up event planned.

First, to garner community support we will be on the North Texas State Fair Grounds in Denton on Saturday, May 2nd from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. to collect: Coupons for Fort Hood, Pull Tabs, Birthday in a Box, Pennies for Progress and donations to Relay for Life.  We are looking for 4-Hers who would like to give a few hours and help collect items.  You can help by posting the enclosed fliers and sending the news article to your local paper.

Additionally, 4-H is holding a closet swap/clean-out.  The 4-H Closet Swap will take place on Saturday, May 2nd from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at Maura Wingard's house (642 Jernigan Rd. Copper Canyon, TX).  As part of our Consumer Education - Recycling Program, Denton County 4-H is having a unique recycling event but it will only work with you there!  Bring anything out of your closet that you would be willing to swap with someone else.  As long as you bring something you may take something, free of charge.  Anyone can shop for a small fee.  All proceeds and anything left over will be donated to Christian Community Action, CCA.  Items you can swap may include: Clothes items, shoes, hats, purses and belts.  Please bring items clean and ready to wear.  To schedule a drop off or a pick up, please contact Susan Kilpatrick, 940.241.3097, (s_kilpatrick@verizon.net).  All items must be collected by 7p.m. Friday, May 1st.

Of course the most important part of all of this is the giving back.  We will be delivering the pull tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Fort Worth on Sunday, May 3rd at 3:00 p.m.  We will also be delivering desserts at that time.  Please RSVP (jmcalister@ag.tamu.edu) if you will be attending or sending desserts, as I will need a complete headcount.

We are still finalizing plans for the delivery of the Birthday in a Box.  Rather than just ship off all the wonderful donations we have received we are in the process of scheduling a day to hand deliver the boxes and learn more first hand about the program.  Look for more details in the days to come.

I am so proud of all we have accomplished this year.  Our 4-Hers ROCK!
