A Quail's Best Friend?

| | Comments (0)

I just returned from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association convention in Nashvillle. It was at the Opryland motel, a veritable behemoth of a lodge. So, when I ran into folks I actually knew I counted it as destiny rather than chance. Sure enough I ran into the President, President-elect, and a recent past-President of the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association . . . Dr. Dick Sherron, Jon Means, and Bobby McCan, respectively.

I've always said that a quail's best friend is a rancher with a bird dog. Think about it. Overgrazing is at the root of most evils of quail in Texas, and if the rancher doesn't have a vested interest in quail (i.e., a bird dog), chances are quail won't be high on his list of priorities.

Texas is lucky in that respect. John Dudley, a past-President from Comanche once told me that one does not ascend to President of TSCRA unless he/she is a quail hunter.

Sounds like a heckuva prerequisite to me!
