Fall Hunting Preview

| | Comments (0)

While we all swelter under the August sun, some one million Texans, as eager as a child waiting for Christmas day, are merrily taking inventory of their supplies and counting down the days until hunting season begins. Whether your idea of hunting is picking your way through mossy river bottoms listening for distant gobblers, slogging through the muck in the dark setting up decoys to draw in weary waterfowl, or perching in a tree waiting for that wide racked buck to pass nearby, hunting appeals to man's desire to commune with nature on a variety of levels. The experiences of the hunt (sights, smells, sounds), as well as the thrill of the pursuit, are what draw many from comfy homes and stressful offices each fall to the outdoors.

Kilgore College is seeking bulls for their second testing period of 2007 which is scheduled to start on September 15th. Bull testing programs offer producers the opportunity to obtain performance data on bull prospects. The upcoming testing period is for fall 2006 to winter 2007 born calves.

Hot summer days with no wind are prime times for fish die offs in farm ponds. Farmers worried about losing their fish should check on ponds early in the morning, which is the time of day that pond oxygen levels are at their lowest.

Last month the agents in Smith, Rains, Van Zandt, and Wood Counties held a field day between Quitman and Emory to show the results of our second year of blacberry control efforts.

Calling all Smith County forage producers. Time is quickly approaching to enter hay samples into the 2007 Smith County Hay Show. This is the 23rd year for the event which doubles as an educational event for area forage growers and as a means of raising money for youth, conservation activites, and scholarships. Hay raised in Smith County or by a producer that lives in Smith County is eligible for entry. I recommend that you send in a sample from each cutting from each field you have. That way you get a great picture of your winter forage supplies before the critical feeding season gets here.
