Pastures and Forages: October 2008 Archives

October is winter pasture planting season in East Texas.  Producers have several options, one of which is the inclusion of legume crops (i.e. clovers) which can provide high quality spring forage and add nitrogen to the pasture system at the same time.

Dr. Ray Smith at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Overton has developed a nice "Aggie Clover" web site that discusses varieties, planting rates, planting tips, and management information.  Click on the following link to visit Aggie Clover

For those interested in planting cool season annual forages like ryegrass or the cereal grains (wheat, oats, or rye), the following publication on Annual Winter Pastures for East Texas provides planting and management tips as well AnnualWinterPasturesETx.pdf
