4-H ROUNDUP IS COMING!

March 7, 2009 is the big day.  For guidelines and entry forms for the county contest, see the following  link:  2009 Roundup Newsletter.pdf  .

District 4-H Roundup is set for April 25th at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, and State 4-H Roundup for Senior 4-H'ers is June 9-12 at College Station.

Workshop participation is limited and is done on a first-come, first-serve basis. Workshops for 2009 will be announced in the Spring of 2009.  Be watching the Texas 4-H website for more information.

National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the National 4-H program. Each year a National Design Team of Extension educators, 4-H youth, and 4-H adult volunteers analyze current youth issues and determine the most effective ways to address them. The program combines a variety of fun and exciting educational, recreational and networking opportunities. The program combines plenary sessions, seminars, discussion groups, and a service learning experience. The nation's most outstanding community leaders, speakers, and educators present the most current and timely information available.

2009 HERITAGE LAND BANK SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Attached is information on our 2009 Heritage Land Bank Scholarship Program which awards four $2,500 Scholarships annually.  If you know of a high school senior planning to attend college and major in a field of Agriculture, please direct them to our website at www.heritagelandbank.com to print out a copy of the Scholarship Application and General Rules.

 

This same information has also been mailed to all Ag-Science Instructors and High School Counselors throughout our chartered territories.  Application deadline to apply is March 31st.

RESULTS FROM THE DISTRICT 5 2009 CONSUMER DECISION MAKING CONTEST:

Smith County had two Senior teams and two Intermediate individuals participate.
Senior Team 1 included Samantha Richardson, Katie Williams, Emily Svoboda, and Nikki Brousseau.
Senior Team 2 included Apryl Hansen, Joanna Leath, and Mary Shogry.
Intermediates participating individually were Rachal Gilbert and Virginia Leath.

Senior Team 2 took 3rd Place

High Point Team Results
Senior Team 1 took 2nd Place
Senior Team 2 took 3rd Place

Intermediate Individuals
Rachal Gilbert placed 1st
Virginia Leath placed 15th

Our teams and individuals not only did a great job, they learned some valuable consumer lessons which will serve them well in their comparison shopping!

NEW 4-H EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATION COURSE

Texas 4-H and Youth Development in partnership with Texas AgriLife Extension eLearning are proud to announce a new online Get To The Point! course to teach skills of developing and presenting a 4-H Educational Presentation. 
 
The Get To The Point! course is for all 4-H members, parents, volunteers, and county Extension agents to expand their knowledge of researching topics, organizing, developing, and presenting an Educational Presentation in one of the numerous categories at the local, county, district, and state levels.  The online course includes interactive activities including scenarios and question and answer sessions, as well as videos of educational presentations.  
 
The Get To The Point! course is now open for enrollment. To access the course, go to http://courses.extension.org/course/view.php?id=45 or follow the link from the Texas 4-H and Youth Development website. Once at the site, follow the instructions to Create an Account, or log in if you already have one. Then you'll be able to Get To The Point! of learning more about 4-H Educational Presentations.
