Backup Your PC with Nero SmartStart

| | Comments (0)

Well it was bound to happen, and one night it did, quoting Garth Brooks! Back on October 6, 2005 I warned all my users and anyone else that would listen that you were/are basically playing electronic roulette with your data if you are not backing up your PC frequently. Would you believe in the past three weeks, I have had 5 workstation hard drives fail!! What does that mean? Well, in 3 of the 5 cases, no data was recoverable off the hard drive. That's right, nothing - zip could be saved!! And, 5 out of 5 had no backup of their data in any form!

Don't be the next victim! Who needs to backup? Well ask yourself this question, if I walked in the office tomorrow and my machine was stolen, is there anything on there I would miss or could not live without? If you answered yes, you need to be backing up because a hard drive failure is pretty much like the machine being stolen.

Here are two options to backup your PC. Both are very simple, you just need to take the time to follow the directions. Option one, back in October I posted the EIT Two Step Workstation Backup. If you don't have the Nero CD burning software on your machine then use this option, click for more info. If you have purchased a Gateway from the Cost-share progam in the past 2 or 3 years, all these machines came with the Nero StartSmart CD burning software. This OPS entry will walk you through how to use that application to backup your PC

EIT Two Step Workstation Backup

If you are not frequently backing up the data on your workstation, then you are basically playing electronic roulette with your data. Sooner or later, you will experience data loss either from hardware failure, accidental deletion, software problems, viruses and/or malware, or natural disaster. When researching a simple backup solution to offer you, I tried to use the technology you already have in your office. Here is a solution for you to backup your data. It is a two step process. Step one, use Cobian 6 backup to create a compressed zip file of all your data. Step 2, burn that zip file to CD-R or CD-RW.

The first thing you need to do is download Cobian 6 to your desktop. You can down load it here:

http://eit.tamu.edu/download/Cbu6setupold.exe

Next, to install Cobian 6 backup, double click on the Cbu6Setupold.exe file. Follow the on screen instructions. Note, when installing check, As an Application. No Auto Start
